# Use your own AI provider

> Optionally connect your own OpenAI or Anthropic subscription, how to connect, refresh and disconnect it, and what changes when you do.

You don't need your own AI provider: [AI is included](https://docs.ironoctopus.ai/ai/included-ai.md) with your plan. If you already pay for an OpenAI or Anthropic subscription and would rather Iron Octopus used it, you can connect it. Each person connects their own subscription. It isn't shared with the rest of the workspace.

## What you can connect

| Provider | Subscription | Used by |
| - | - | - |
| OpenAI | Your ChatGPT subscription | AI workers on the Codex and Pi runtimes |
| Anthropic | Claude Pro or Max | AI workers on the Pi runtime |

## What changes when you connect

* Iron Octopus makes your subscription available to compatible AI workers, for work done on your behalf.
* That usage counts against your subscription, under your agreement with the provider, and the provider's own limits apply. It's billed by the provider, not by Iron Octopus.
* Your content goes to that provider under your agreement with them.
* Iron Octopus stores only the access details needed to connect, encrypted.

## Connect OpenAI

**1. Open Models**

Go to Workspace settings › **Models**, and find **User Subscription Authentication**.

**2. Start authorization**

Click **Connect OpenAI**. Iron Octopus shows a one-time code.

**3. Approve it with OpenAI**

Click **Open authorization page**, sign in to OpenAI, and enter the code. Back in Iron Octopus, the page shows **Waiting for authorization...** until you finish.

**4. Done**

The page confirms **OpenAI subscription connected for Codex and Pi runtimes.**

## Connect Anthropic

**1. Open Models**

Go to Workspace settings › **Models**, and find **Anthropic (Claude Pro/Max)**.

**2. Approve access**

Click **Connect Anthropic**, then **Open Anthropic authorization**, and approve access in your browser.

**3. Paste the code**

Copy the authorization code, or the final address your browser shows, into **Paste authorization code or redirect URL**, then click **Complete connection**.

**4. Done**

The page confirms **Anthropic subscription connected for the Pi runtime.**

## Refresh or disconnect

Each connected subscription shows its account and status.

* **Refresh** renews the connection without signing in again. Use it if work using your subscription starts failing.
* **Reconnect** signs in again, for example after you change your password with the provider.
* **Disconnect** stops Iron Octopus using your subscription. Work goes back to included AI.

## If something goes wrong

| You see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **This workspace does not allow personal OpenAI subscriptions.** (or Anthropic) | Your workspace doesn't permit personal subscriptions. Ask a workspace admin. Included AI still works. |
| **OpenAI authorization expired. Please try again.** | The code timed out. Click **Connect OpenAI** again and enter the new code promptly. |
| Work using your subscription fails or stops | You may have hit your provider's usage limit, or the connection expired. Click **Refresh**, or wait for your provider's limit to reset. |
